The film comes down to finding the parallels between Marie&#8217;s life and Balthazar&#8217;s.  I think the acting is inexcusably bad across board, and the &#8216;spirituality&#8217; that most critics speak of completely went by me.  The film is well shot, but I think that&#8217;s the only compliment I can give it.
